Project Overview
With support from the National Science Foundation, Andrew D. Martin ( site ) (Washington University, School of Law) and Kevin M. Quinn ( site ) (Harvard University, Department of Government) have developed the so-called "Martin-Quinn" measures of judicial ideology. Measuring the relative location of U.S. Supreme Court justices on an ideological continuum allows us to better understand the politics of the high court. In addition, such measures are an important building block of statistical models of the Supreme Court, the separation of powers system, and the judicial hierarchy. The project website provides the scores, replication materials, and a number of papers, press items, and projects that have resulted from this research.
